Prajavani – Kannada Daily - Headline – Mummy I want a Mobile ' Dated: 26 September 2007

The Karnataka government has decided to restrict the use of mobile phones by children under the age of 16 in schools and junior colleges. The state government has also decided to curtail the sale of mobile handsets to children in this age group. It says the decision has been taken in the interests of the children's health.

The government panel got concerned about the possible health hazards after a study on the risks from mobile phones. In its preliminary findings, the Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC) under Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said that mobile phone use put the children at risk. Children under 16 should be barred from using mobiles as it can cause tissue damage.

But the generation at the centre of this debate says it wants the freedom to make an informed decision.

'To Ban or Not to Ban'- the debate continues. In this era of communication revolution, how far this ban is justified, people are asking that question also.
